STRATEGIC STANDARDS ADVISOR

Delwyn Jones
Project Leader, CRC for Construction Innovation

Del has a strong background in building material surface and environmental analysis as a Research Scientist developing better and new building materials and processes comprising various types/grades of steel, aluminium, polymer, pigment, ceramic and masonry constituents for typical and extreme environments. Many such developments were adopted globally across various industries. In 1995, Del joined NSW Public Works and Services: Environment Design Unit (EDU) as Principal Consulting Scientist to develop a Life Cycle Assessment database for assessing environmentally responsible building design, NSW Government Supply Contracts and Homebush Bay Development for the Green Games.

In 1997 she joined the Queensland Public Works: Built Environment Research Unit (BERU), as a Principal Scientific Officer to coordinate a National Forum for a Healthy and Sustainable Built Environment and jointly won the 1998 Banksia Built Environment Award for this initiative. Her work has been applied to:
The Ecologically Sustainable Office Fitout Guideline awarded the FMA Research and NAWIC Innovation Awards in 2001 and adapted for the Australian Green Building Council Green Star: Office Fitout Tool.
The CRC for Construction Innovation's Life Cycle Inventory database for LCADesign which is prototype software automating eco-assessment of building design.
Del's publications include 3 books, many book chapters and invited lectures, >100 papers and reports, and 6 patents.

His major area of expertise is materials involving paper, metals, plastics, textile, cardboard, glass, coatings, lubricants and organic chemicals as well as material phenomenon such as chemical emissions and corrosion. He has considerable knowledge of analytical methods, test methods and performance criteria of a wide range of materials and chemicals and is a NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) signatory.  Robert’s particular expertise is the environmental characteristics of building materials. He is a member of NACE (The International Corrosion Society) and the Institute of Materials Engineering Australasia.

Cetec Pty Ltd is a science and technology based applied consultancy established since 1987. Cetec operates nationally in Australia with offices in Melbourne and Sydney. Cetec offers services in environmental, OH&S and the property and industry sector. In recent years Cetec has developed a “Facility Ecology” approach to indoor environment issues. “Facility Ecology” is a study of the interaction of building/structure with the occupants and involves the collection of quantitative indoor environment parameters and occupant assessments to assess overall wellbeing and productivity. Cetec also conducts evaluation of building materials; e.g. chemicals emissions, to ascertain their potential impact on the indoor environment.

John L.F Daglish B. Arch, RMIT; Bldg Blgy, IBBE; Perm Design, London

Thirteen years experience in ecologically sustainable design in Australia and Europe. Projects have been undertaken in Europe which are energy and resource efficient, in context with the local environment and address the issues of human health. Low energy eco-housing using passive and active solar systems, including the Passivhaus concept, innovative materials, super insulation, water harvesting and waste disposal systems have been developed. Eco-village design and urban ecological restructuring have been researched.

Currently secretary of Batir-Sain, an independent association promoting ecological construction in France. Author and contributor to various publications on ecological construction including internet resources and forums and a member of regional working groups. Co-organiser and member of the selection committee of Bâtir Ecologique, a natural building demonstration and exposition event in Paris. In Australia, John was instrumental in the ontroduction of the Energy Smart Homes Policy for the Sustainable Energy Development Authority of NSW including over 1500 energy simulations using NatHERS He has undertaken numerous  energy assessments and design optimisations including an audit of the NatHERS simulations of the Olympic Village, Homebush.
