Foamglas – Cellular Glass Thermal Insulation – [Cat.2 – Stock Available]
Overview:
An expanded closed cell glass insulation with high compression, fire, water and vapour resistance. Suitable for residential, commercial and industrial roof, wall, floor and slab insulation applications.
Product Description:
Foamglas is a rigid cellular glass insulation panel made partially with recycled glass. It is a durable thermal insulation used in both building & industrial applications. It is made from a non-renewable but abundant resource.
The insulation is fabricated by the addition of carbon to glass in a high temperate 1000°C oven creating a glass foam. The material is then cut to size.
It is characterized by high compressive strength, resistance to moisture (water or vapour), resistance to fire, dimensional stability, and slightly lower initial insulating values (lower R-value) relative to other rigid insulations commonly used in buildings. However, the thermal properties of Foamglas do not degrade over time or with moisture contact.
The product is suitable for internal and sub-surface external insulation applications such as warm roofing systems, green roofs, parking decks, roof decks, ventilated facades, cavity walls, walls with rendering system and floor insulation. It also has a special role in providing a thermal break in the foundations of masonry constructions.
As the product is a rigid panel it requires accurate fitting to avoid thermal breaks. However, pressed joints or a two layer staggered joint strategy can eliminate this issue.
The product is supplied in slab or board form and according to the application, is dry applied (mechanically fixed) or bonded with mineral or bituminous cold adhesive and/or hot bitumen.

ECOSPECIFIER ISSUES OF CONCERN / RED LIGHTS
Issue of Concern
Foamglas products are available with bitumen surfacing. Extracts of steam-refined and air-refined bitumens are possibly carcinogenic to humans (IARC).
Small levels of Hydrogen Sulfide and Carbon Monoxide gases can be released when the product is cut or crushed (Note - crushing is highly unlikely due to the compressive strength of the product). Hydrogen Sulfide is considered very toxic by inhalation and Carbon Monoxide harmful by inhalation (Hazardous Substances Information System).
Carbon black is a constituent used in the production of FoamGlas. It is not considered a risk in use bound into polymer fabric, as primary source of entry is via inhalation of carbon black dust. Carbon Black in its raw form is possibly carcinogenic to humans. See Glossary for more information on Carbon Black. (IARC)
