Supertrade FZE - SuperPipe [ECG-Premium] - [Cat.1 - Manfactured/Assembled]

Overview:

Superpipe is a light weight multi layer composite pipe system, made from polyethylene and aluminium that combines both the advantages of plastic and metal.

Product Description:

Superpipe is a multi-layer composite pipe consisting of 5 layers : an polyethylene inner pipe adhesive bonded to an aluminium pipe which is inturn adhesive bonded to a  polyethylene outer pipe. The aluminium core prevents the ingress of oxygen and reduces heat expansion. The inner polyethylene pipe has a surface roughness of only 0.0004 mm, which is 17.5 times more smooth than PEX pipes (0.007 mm). The ultra smooth surface prevents build up of scale and bacteria, and gives high flow rates.

The pipe is corrosion resistant, simple to bend, relatively quick to install and is supplied in coils of up to 200m in length, minimising the need for couplers, elbows, adhesive or welding.

Superpipe is suitable for potable hot and cold water, hydronic heating, gases, refrigerants, and compressed air pipes for residential and industrial use. It is rated for hot water permanent temperatures up to 95°C and a permanent pressure of 10 bar, with a minimum life span of over 50 years. It is made under licence of Uponor (trade name Unipipe/Uponor MLCP) in the Qeshm Free Zone - Iran.

SuperPipe*

  • PE-RT Polyetheylene (112g/m, ~74% b/w)
  • Aluminum (38g/m, ~25% b/w)
  • Adhesive (trace amounts)

*based on 20 x 2.25mm pipe (Internal diameter 15.5mm, 150g/m)

SuperPipe Fittings*

Heat treated stress free brass, nickel plated

*Fittings have internal O-rings and grooves, making them leak free. They are available as screw or press fittings. Press fittings require a special electro hydraulic crimping tool.

INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES

The main advantage of plastic piping systems is the quicker installation time and lower skills-base required. The piping system is well suited to higher temperature applications >70°C. The aluminium layer prevents oxygen diffusion into the water, which occurs in alternative plastic pipes.

Traditionally, copper forms the base material for piping. Superpipe provides a suitable replacement for copper which has significant environmental and health implications associated with its mining and production. However, this product has similar embodied energy to copper.

HUMAN HEALTH

Health

The internal polyurethane layer is inert and will not contaminate water in the same way as the common alternative copper.

Not applicable

Indoor Environment Quality

Jointing is by press-fit or screw-fit, as apposed to other pipe systems that require heating or adhesives, hence no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are generated internally.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions - There are no toxics in the production of the raw materials.

Physical - Product is petrochemical based, and will therefore have limited physical pollution due to oil extraction.

Aquatic

Emissions - Ethylene is produced in the initial production stage of polyethylene and the emissions to water consist of methanol and butane. The production does not produce waste water. There is no pollution of water/groundwater or to the soil. Other aquatic emissions include methanol and butane in the production of ethylene.

Physical - The petrochemical portion of polyethylene results in potential sea pollution in the extraction or spilling of oil.

Atmosphere

Greenhouse (GHG) - The raw materials fabrication especially aluminium has a high GHG impact but on site installation is low as the fittings are press-fit.

Greenhouse intensity - 0.755kgCO2/m (pipe only)*

*Based on greenhouse gas intensity figures for the two main components; aluminium 10.3 kgCO2/kg and polyethylene 3.247 kgCO2/kg (Oekoinventaire 1996).

Transport intensity - Supply of raw materials from Europe by boat.

Operational efficiency - Polyethylene has inherent insulation properties requiring less insulation.

Re-use Efficiency - Potentially suitable for re-use subject to age and water conditions.

Toxics and Pollutants - Polyethylene is highly stable and does not readily react with other elements or compounds in the environment and is not a source of toxics or pollutants in use.  The process of alumina refinement generates plant emissions, including coal dust, fugitive lime dust, alumina dust and aerosol generated from plant process liquor including fluorine/fluoride emissions that are known toxins.

Ozone Depletion - None

Urban Heat Island Effects - Not applicable

Noise - Not applicable

Biodiversity

Open cast mining of minerals used in the fabrication involves habitat destruction. Petroleum, the primary raw material of polyethylene, can have localised marine biodiversity impacts in its extraction and potentially catastrophic impacts when spills occur.

RESOURCE DEPLETION

Resource Efficiency

The two main components of Superpipe are aluminium and plastic. Aluminium is relatively abundant and can be recycled. Polyethylene is derived from fossil fuel based feedstock and is a non-renewable resource.

Embodied Fossil Fuel Energy

SuperPipe has an embodied energy of 24.9 MJ/m (pipe only)*

Based on the embodied energy figures for the two main components; aluminium 247.3 MJ/kg and polyethylene 138.4MJ/kg.

The following figures are for comparable piping product materials; copper 124.9MJ/kg and polypropylene 73MJ/kg (Oekoinventaire 1996).

Embodied Water

The water used in the fabrication of the two main components is  Polyetheylene 107.8 L/kg and Aluminum (0% recycled) 243 L/kg (Oekoinventaire 1996).

Durability
A 50 year lifespan is given but the critical elements are the O-ring seals made from EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber) that maintain water-tightness.

Reusability

The pipe can in principal be reused if the joint is cut out.

Repairability

Yes

Design for Dematerialisation

No

Design for Disassembly

No, the joints are not reversible.

Recyclability

Yes, aluminium is highly recyclable. But bonded to the polyethylene makes it technically difficult to recycle.

Maintenance

No maintenance required through the products life.

Product Takeback Scheme

None

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
