Assessing products for inclusion on ecospecifier
Careful product assessment and a systems approach is essential to best practice and eco-preferable design. Key challenges in selecting materials that are environmentally preferable include:
- Understanding and identifying environmental priorities
- Identifying a products characteristics (cost, technical, environmental) and impacts over its life-cycle
It can be very challenging to determine which of the wide variety of claims that are made in the marketplace are entirely accurate. This process can soak up enormous resources.
ecospecifier.ae aims to make this process more straight-forward by clearly identifying critical criteria and preferable materials.
An in-depth methodology based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was developed to assist in this process. All products listed on ecospecifier.ae have been assessed against it.
Over time the the database will incorporate increasing depth of LCA data. At present many of the assessments are based on expert knowledge of the ecospecifier team, and documentary evidence where this can be sourced including from regulatory authorities scientific journals, ecolabels, documented manufacturer claims, and completed ecospecifier Questionnaires.
